Welcome to Devon Olives
Home of 100% New Zealand extra virgin olive oil
Devon Olives grows olives in the Far North of New Zealand near
picturesque Mangonui, in Doubtless Bay. Situated between the sea and
the Oruaiti River we enjoy high sunshine and free draining mineral rich
soils which contribute to the flavour of our extra virgin olive oil.
We have 10 hectares, part of the Ocean View Olive Estate comprising
olive trees, lucitanicas (macrocarpa), and natve bush.
The cultivars we grow are;
• J5 – is sourced locally in the Far North but originally was
introduced by the Dalmatian gum diggers who came to New
Zealand from Croatia in the late 19th century. Milton Johnson,
nurseryman, took cuttings from a 100 year old tree near
Hokianga and developed the J1 through J5 cultivars which
thrive in Northland. J5 produces a rich, golden, buttery oil full of
flavour.
• Frantoio – this is a beautiful Italian Cultivar from Tuscany,
genetically quite similar to the J5 cultivar. Frantoio is frost
resistant and crops heavily to produce excellent oil and table
olives. Like the J5 this oil is smooth and mellow.
• Leccinno – another Tuscan variety which fruits first in the Far
North, usually ready in late April or early May. The olives are
suitable for both table olives or for oil. Leccino oil is olive green
and has a more robust flavour with a distinct peppery taste.
• Koroneiki – is a small olive fruit with minimal acidity, originally
from the Korone area of Greece but now grown all over Greece.
This cultivar fruits heavily and is ready usually late May. The oil
is excellent with hints of aromatic herbs and a slight peppery
finish.
